2008 Judges

Valerie Y. Bolden-Barrett/Judge
Valerie was born in Hartford and raised in Bloomfield. She graduated with honors from Bloomfield High School and earned a B.A. degree from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She began her career as a graphic designer and subsequently became a writer, journalist, and specialist in public relations and media relations. Valerie earned national recognition as the senior editor of three national publications, and in 2002, was selected as one of only 20 editors to participate in an international Journalists Roundtable. She worked on public affairs programs for WVIT Channel 30 in New Britain, and also WFSB Channel 3 in Hartford. She has served on the boards of The Southside Institutions Neighborhood Alliance (SINA), the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Foundation, and the Huntington House Museum. She currently operates a freelance-writing service in Bloomfield.

Abdul Musa/Judge
Abdul Musa is the owner and operator of GrowUrBiz, an online marketing firm, offering a wide range of web, print and online marketing services, located in West Springfield, Massachusetts. When he is not running his business he spends time volunteering with the Greater Hartford Jaycees, Local Soup Kitchens, Junior Achievement and various other civic and community organizations. Abdul's hobbies include golf, reading, walking, meditation, yoga, cooking and traveling. He currently resides in West Springfield.

Kathleen Freese/Judge
After graduating from CCSU Kathy became a 6th grade elementary school teacher. Somehow, 25 years ago, she got into the insurance industry and fell in love with it. Kathy currently works as a Sales Executive for Travelers Property & Casualty. Her territory is Hartford County. She works with Independent Agents and gets to meet very interesting people every day. Kathy resides in Old Saybrook where she enjoys her beautiful view of the Oyster River. Kathy is also a volunteer at the "Read to Succeed" program at the YMCA, teaching adults to read.


Timothy H. Carmon/Auditor
Timothy Carmon was born and raised in Windsor, Connecticut. He attended Loomis Chaffee in Windsor graduating in the class of 1999. Tim went on to the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia graduating with a BS in Accounting and a BA in Religion. Soon after college he passed the CPA exam and became a practicing CPA in the state of Connecticut. Currently, Tim works at MassMutual Life Insurance Company in Springfield, Massachusetts as a Corporate Financial Risk Manager. In 2004 Tim moved to South Windsor after marrying his wife Kristin Rowe whom he met in College. They are both eagerly awaiting their first child due in late May.
