Steve Gephard is a fisheries biologist who worked for CT DEEP for over 40 years. He has extensive experience with diadromous fish (fish that migrate back and forth between the ocean and the rivers), which include the American eel, Atlantic salmon, river herring, and the mighty shad. Come learn about Windsor’s favorite fish from this leading expert. What is a shad? How do they live? Why are they so cool? And how can we help them?

Windsor Shad Derby Festival

The Windsor Shad Derby Festival is a long standing New England Tradition. The tradition began in 1955 with an annual fishing tournament to raise awareness of the growing pollution of the Connecticut River. In 1966, as the Derby grew in size a parade and festivities on the Windsor Town Green were added to celebrate & commemorate the Shad Derby Festival and promote the best of the local area through it's many resources, businesses and organizations.
